Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland that commonly affects aging men. It is one of the leading causes of Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (LUTS) in men over 50.
Overview
- Prostate location:Surrounds the urethra just below the bladder.
- As the prostate enlarges, it compresses the urethra, leading to urinary symptoms.
- Not a precursor to prostate cancer, but the two can coexist.
Symptoms of BPH
These symptoms overlap with LUTS and are classified as:
Voiding (Obstructive) Symptoms
- Hesitancy
- Weak or interrupted stream
- Prolonged urination
- Incomplete bladder emptying
Storage (Irritative) Symptoms
- Increased frequency
- Nocturia
- Urgency
- Urge incontinence (less common)
